“The project that the duo worked on together was for ODE, von Planta's sustainable brand, which has upcycling and mending at its core. “The concept behind ODE is that one can bring one’s own clothing, choose three colours and the desired placement for the embroidery and/or repair,” explains von Planta, who is a Central Saint Martins graduate. “Then the piece gets sent out to Beirut and returns two months later uniquely transformed and revived with beautiful and traditional hand embroidery. The very personal aspect of each commission creates a close and reciprocal connection between the artisan and the client which is so important in highlighting the value of the hand made today.”

Von Planta’s insistence that the team at Studio Jana are fully part of the co-creating process is further illustrative of her desire to centre craft and the women behind it in the process. ’If the client specifies, we may say the colours and placement, but the women choose the motif because it is their heritage so that creative freedom is up to them.’
